The Lady Dons came to play tonight, and play they did! With an energy and intensity rarely seen this season the Red and White matched up evenly with the Region 8 leader, Springville, and made the Don’s Senior Night one to remember for Seniors and underclassmen alike.
The crowd tonight was massive! Families, students, members of the community all came to celebrate the Senior players, but all were treated to a show of skill, teamwork and athleticism that rivaled any Spanish Fork Soccer has ever produced. The score was admittedly lopsided, but the play was not. Possession was equal and the attacking efforts of the Dons forced the Devils to scramble. Spanish Fork’s defense, while not perfect, constantly frustrated Springville’s forward line.
Coach Becki Pace spoke at halftime about the outstanding effort of her team. “These ladies are one! They’re unified and it shows! I couldn’t be more proud of their effort, I couldn’t be more happy with their enthusiasm. We are all having fun and it shows.”
The Lady Dons were having fun and it was obvious. Only 10 minutes into the second half, on a free-kick awarded thirty yards outside the left side of the box, Senior Captain, Daisy Gonzalez floated one over the wall and out of reach of the Devil’s keeper. It was the lone score of the match for the Dons, but you’d have thought it had won them the match as they celebrated the goal! The Spanish Fork bench was up and yelling for their teammates, the coaches were smiling, and the girls were jumping and slapping backs and hugging the captain.
Maybe the combination of playing under the lights, the ceremony of celebrating the Senior players, the sizable crowd, and the momentum from their match two days earlier came together in the soccer version of the perfect storm, but whatever the reason, the Lady Dons made Awesome Happen!!
