Rivalries are fun. Rivalries bring out the best and worst in players, coaches, and fans. Rivalries usually mean that the teams are evenly matched, know a thing or two about each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and expend effort to exploit the weaknesses.
The Lady Dons of Spanish Fork played host to the Skyhawks of Salem Hills Thursday for the second of two region matches between these district rivals. Sadly, for the Dons, the result of match two was very similar to the first round, with the Dons failing to capitalize on some very good chances late in the second half. “If we’d had another 5 or 6 minutes,” said coach Shane Ferrin, “it is probable that we’d have forced an overtime and I think our girls would have changed their fate today.”
The Dons did see a goal midway through the second half when a ball was beautifully spotted through the Salem back line where Senior Gracie Sorenson punished the gap with a commanding and powerful strike.
It would prove to be another case of too little too late for the Lady Dons who have struggled to find successes this season. With four more matches remaining for the Dons, they hope to change their direction and find a few wins in the remaining games.
