With only minutes remaining in a tight match against the RSL Academy High School team, the home team Dons nearly gave up the win when the defense collapsed and a well-placed banger snaked through on a path to the Don’s net. Senior keeper, Jacob Atkinson stretched his 6-foot frame an extra few inches and miraculously tapped the bullet up and backward, saving the tenuous 1-goal lead and securing the win for his Spanish Fork boys.
“It was a save that very few High School keepers would be capable of,” said Assistant Coach, Ryan Crockett. “Jacob trains hard and works harder. This team trusts him. I trust him. And you can see why in his performance today.”
It was one of only two saves required of the keeper in a match that saw the home team possessing the ball and the field for the majority of the match. When asked about the low scoring match, coach Shane Ferrin said, “It comes down to finishing our chances. We are creating great movement, great possession, but with those chances there needs to be some completion. We need to finish our attack with shots that find frame.”
The one goal that Spanish Fork did finish came off a well-placed free kick that Senior Ryker Barton floated into the six-yard box, and after some bouncing around inside that space, squirted free in front of Sophomore Davis Paxton. Paxton, off balance, and falling, never lost his composure or confidence and in a move that would make most evening news highlight reels, he reached high and rolling sideways as he dropped, connected with the ball, head-high, scoring the lone goal for the Dons. “Pretty,” is how Coach Ferrin described Paxton’s goal. “Pretty.”
The Dons take their show on the road for the rest of the week with a out-of-region matchup at Timpanogos on Wednesday and a region game against Lehi on Friday.
