With a lopsided possession game in both halves, Spanish Fork should have dominated on the scoreboard too. But some costly errors in communication left ALA forwards unmarked twice inside the box and the Dons went into the half down 2-0. But this Spanish Fork team showed their metal when only minutes into the second, Junior Alexis Baez cleaned up a spilled ball finding the back of the net to open the team account for the season. Minutes later on a beautiful cross from Junior Cesar Fuentes, Senior defender, Ryker Barton put his head on it and the score was tied. With ten minutes remaining in the clock, the winning score came when a loose ball was deftly played out to Senior back, Caden Parcell. Parcell struck the ball low and hard finding the back of the net and sending the visiting crowd into celebrations that belied the intense cold.
The possession was all Spanish Fork with the Dons controlling the ball for more than 70% of the match. Shooting was uneven as well with the Dons taking 22 shots to The Eagles 7 – two on very questionable free kicks at the top of the eighteen.
It was a good start for a very young and talented roster and proves that Region 10 and this Spanish Fork club could be the best place to watch great soccer.
